John Bauer was a Swedish illustrator around the turn of the last century. He is most known for his folk and fairytale illustrations, all which perfectly capture that stange Scandinavian mix of darkness and clarity. His images are informed by the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) period, but come from the heart of the Arts and Crafts movement of the time. As with both of these movements the roots of Romanticism are very evident.
Bauer perfected something which I strive to accomplish in my own work, to make children’s work for adults- or, adult work for children. This either/or work weaves together fine art and illustration. The story is secondary to the spectacular image.
